Why did McCain complain about people wearing T-shirts that call Palin the same word he called his own wife?

He brought it up in the debate tonight. Are we not supposed to remember that McCain called Cindy that same word in front of reporters once upon a time? Doesn't that mean he considers it a term of endearment?
